Supers Match Day Report, courtesy of President Tiger...
Matty Sullivan’s supers side headed to Glen Iris on Sunday, to play the ladder leaders St Kevins. Pags was celebrating the arrival of his first born, and Paul Salloum was getting the feeling that finally, his lads were understanding how each other play. Problem was, we were up against St Kevins.
Turned out it wasn’t a problem. In a cracking game, led by Pags, the classy, smart Mo Kakour and T in the middle, Brunswick played fast, contested footy. Playing on the wing Jules took a one handed mark that will be remebered for ages. St Kevins led by 5 goals toward the end of the third quarter when disaster struck.
Talking back to the ump has been our achilles heel in 2018. Ahmed was playing full forward. His strength, leading and hands were first class all day. But he was was sent off for questioning a decision, leaving Abdul Chakielli to be our main target (more on Abdul in a tic). Our bench, which now included Irishman Nyall who’d just blown his calf, were gutted. Heading into the last, it was 18 v 17 against the top side in the comp.
Paul Salloum called for calm at the break. To be honest, he didn’t get it, but still, at least he asked.
Five minutes into the last, and Chris was sent off for talking back to the ump. It really was a harsh call, and you wonder if the umps were a bit toey toward us. Regradless, we were down 18 v 16. A shellacking loomed.
For the last 15 minutes, despite being two short, Matty’s Mudlarks outran, out-tackled and out-thought St Kevins. All our lads connected. “Showman” Georgie Foundas, playing his usual eye-catching game deep forward, was surrounded by two backmen when the footy sailed in. He called “mine!” They both left it. He marked, quickly drilled it to the top of the square to Abdul for another goal. Our bench went off. With two minutes to go, were were just 8 points down. Incredibly, Pags wins another tap, we press, Abdul marks and goals just as the siren blew. Abdul Chakielli kicks six. We lose by three points, but man, it felt like a win.
If we can learn to button our lip on the field during the home and away, there’ll be some shouting done by us late on Grand Final day.

Unfortunately our Mudlarks 35s couldn't get over the line, losing by 4 points to Box Hill North in hot, blustery conditions.
Great work rate and effort from all but a slight 10min lapse in the 3rd quarter proved costly.
Our Supers boys came home like a stream train kicking the last 4 goals of the game and keeping Box Hill North scoreless in the final term. Awesome effort!
Although we couldn’t quite get over the line, it was a positive result for a team with over 8 new guys!
Big congrats to guys playing their first game in a Mudlarks jumper - Jules, Trav, Grange, Lawrence, Mikey, Issa, Pete and a HUGE well done to Jeremy playing his first ever AFL game! Honourable mentions to Pags, Abes, Matty and Mada who all ran out the full game without rest, despite the 30 degree heat. Thanks also to those 45s and 50s players who chipped in to help out. Apologies if we’ve missed anyone.
Onwards and upwards for our 1st home game in a fortnight. Go Mudders!

A great first up win for the Mudlarks 45s over a strong and physical Box Hill North side at Elgar Park.
Conditions were tough on a hot and windy autumn day. The Mudlarks played team oriented football - as evidenced by the spread of goal kickers, with 7 individual goal scorers in total. It was a very even contribution from all players for the entire day.
Well done to the Hulk, leading the 45s in his first game as captain.
Enjoying a stirring rendition of that famous Mudlarks song!

The volunteer bike program that's wheely good for kids.
SEE FULL ARTICLE in TheAge By Carolyn Webb 4 March 2018

Smile says it all: Abdul Popoola masters a donated bike, his first, with help from Bart Sbeghen, co-founder of Dr Cranky's Bikes for Kids, at Clayton North Primary School.
Abdul Popoola is nine years old and had never ridden a bicycle. But his life changed in an instant when he got his own bike - for free.
"Cool" and "awesome" was the verdict from Abdul as he checked out his smart red and black BMX Ultrasonic.
He said "basically all" his friends had bikes. And now he did, too. At first he wobbled all over the place, but was soon zipping around the Clayton North Primary schoolyard, laughing at the freedom of it all.
Such moments make it all worthwhile for Bart Sbeghen, founder of Dr Cranky’s Bikes for Kids, a volunteer-run program that fixes and gives out donated bicycles to primary school students.
"Did you see the look on his face?" Mr Sbeghen said. "He got the balance and his face just lit up."
Abdul's father, Abdulwahid Popoola, said the boy had begged him for a bike, but with his wife studying and him not
working, they couldn’t afford one. "And he’s here today, with a bike, just for free," Mr Popoola said. "He’s excited, and I’m excited, too. He’s a restless type of person. It keeps him fit, and he can cycle to school. I’m on top of the world right now."
Mr Sbeghen, a father of three, started Dr Cranky’s with fellow Dad Peter Hormann at Flemington Primary School. At the time, Mr Sbeghen was an advocate at Bicycle Network.
In 2014, while picking up their kids, they would adjust bike seats and chains for other students. They set up a 'bicycle hospital' that became a hub to give out donated bikes. The program was dubbed Dr Cranky’s because some staff disliked it commandeering a bin shed.
The scheme now runs in six schools around Melbourne and one in Darwin. It has helped more than 860 kids and gifted 543 bicycles. Kinder kids are offered smaller bikes and secondary students drop by to help with
repairs. Mr Sbeghen, now a stay-at-home dad, spends about four afternoons a week, unpaid, running Dr Cranky’s clinics, helped by parent volunteers.
PE teacher Billy Atkin, who helps run the scheme at Clayton North once a fortnight, said Mr Sbeghen’s work was "fantastic".
"Obviously, he’s got his heart in it. He’s determined to make a difference and that’s what he’s doing. It’s given kids independence so they can ride to school, and they can ride to their friends’ houses on the weekends or after school."
Mr Sbeghen says daily exercise "is the answer to our obesity crisis" and bikes are an alternative to organised sport.
"You see kids out just having adventures, they don’t even know they’re being healthy, they’re just having fun."
Schools wanting their own Dr Cranky’s, and parent volunteers, can go to the website, drcrankys.com.au
