MONDAY PRESEASON - Hope to see a few guys turn up to training, now Ruby has the same venue as last year.
6pm Mondays at LAWN 7, BRENS DRV, ROYAL PARK (Off Elliot Ave).
Due to the continued drought, this is all we can get.
Easy to get to by the West Coburg Tram for those coming from the city.
- Remember - NO BOOTS -
We also have an informal kick at Fleming Park at 6pm Thursdays, as well as a family evening from about 6 at the picnic area at Princes Pk No1 (just South of the stadium) and we always seem to be able to have a few kicks as the girls go for a walk around the park.

Condolences - On Wednesday, Steve Kannegiesser rang me with the sad news that his wife Dianne passed away that day.
All at Brunswick send our deepest sympathies to Steve, and his sons Aaron and Ryan.
Dianne had been seriously ill several weeks ago, and had gone back into hospital this week.
It was a shock to Steve that she took a turn for the worse and did not recover.
It is hard to imagine the sorrow such a tragedy would bring to a family, and our thoughts are with Steve and his family. |

RESULTS - Brunswick 18-7 d Greensborough 4-4
Goalkickers: Kanna 4, Najj 3, Frendo, Cookie, Will, ChrisR 2. Singles to Roger, Tiger and Stan
Best: Frendo, Will, Tiger, Rog, Naz, Ruby, Budgie, Cookie, Stan, Kanna, Najj, Huss etc.
Thanks to the guys who helped out Greensborough - Mad Mick & Ahmad.
ASCOT VALE d ESSENDON by 3 points, So in a very even year, the top 4 ended up Ess, AscV and Bruns on 6 wins (percentage in that order) then Diamond Valley half a game behind.
Ming replied: CONGRATS boys on a very good season. Having 2 games against sides with access to their supers oldsters, and the injuries we suffered at their hands puts our finish only percentage off the top is a much better light. AscV had one such spanking by Ess Supers, too.
However - I think Essendon were truely "marginally" better than us. Our far from slack 8 goals against them (with so many of our top players out) was a very good indication of our depth.

Carrum is new to fielding Masters so have been short in the first few games, especially away.
However, this week me meet them while their Superules have a bye, so they might be topped up.
(If they are short, it is a Masters rule that we cannot play with on-field numbers difference of more than one, so there is a possibility several of our guys will have to rotate with the opposition for a half)
Last week's loss to Ascot Vale was hard fought, but they had a pretty good list with up to 8 of their older Supers players bolstering their side. A bit strong for us, and we were lucky they were inaccurate. Our guys played to our strength with possession footy, but lack of big targets up forward saw us loose possession in attack. 2 goals each to Stan and Milo and one to first gamer Troy Starr, while best players were Huss, Tiger, Cookie, Ruby, Kanna, Scotty, Kev, Stan
Diamond Valley drew with 5th place Greensborough to remain the only undefeated team, Essendon, AscotVale and Brunswick fill 2nd 3rd and 4th spots. see Ladders and results at http://mafv.com/viclad.htm

Selection Selection Selection - How do you fit 29 elephants onto a postage stamp? - One posibility
COLORED CIRCLES replied: The 4 players in each colored circle share 2 positions (half a game each).
So taht the one player doesnt play up the one end for both quarters -
Change flanker at about 7min and new player plays a whole 20mins (til next 7min mark).
Change pocket at about 13 min and new player plays whole 20mins (til next 13min mark)
RECTANGLES replied: Similarly, the Ruck/Forward or the KeyDefender groups. (players get more like 3/4 of a game)
ONBALLERS replied: These 6 runners share 5 positions, Engin Room rotating through a rest on the bench (5mins) and the wings.
ATTRITION replied: As players get injured (not too many I hope) the rotations get a bigger share of on-ground-time
CHANGES replied: could be made at 10min mark. Idea of 7-14mins is so not too many cahnges at a time to allow team to settle.

Jackson Res E.Coburg - Our home ground for 2008
(Pretty certain we wont find anything better at this stage)
Though the boundary dimensions are only 129m long by 86 wide, the 'Postage Stamp' isn't too bad. Compared to Fleming Park's 157m by 119m, it is only 14m shorter from the centre to the goals. Seeing we all kick about 7m shorter these days than in our prime, it is an equivalent number of kicks compared to our younger days.
TRAINING will be WEDNESDAYS from about 6pm at Jackson Res

DIV 3 - Debacle - Ming,
Now that Parkmore & Beena have folded. We are down to 9 sides in Div 3. What are the chances of bringing a Masters team from Div 1 (who have a bye anyway during the season)to play in Div 3 for the saeson ?
Don't know a Masters replied: who could hack chasing tail for a season. They don't put that much charge in our wheel chairs. Seriously, the age difference would be insurmountable except for powerhouses like Essendon or Footscray, but double headers would be buggered, and so would Masters1.
Always possible to play one-off Masters bye team vs Div3 bye team

HOLDING THE BABY - Brunswick Power are going into 'recess' for a year so we will be one out at Fleming Park.
East Brunswick Cricket Club has folded, leaving us the power bill of ~$430. They were screwed over by druggies and dealers, and the decent blokes there have been fleeced. Brunswick Power haven't paid $830 of their power bill either, due Sept07. (Masters' share was paid, $330 in June07) Power owe some 3 years ground rental to the council (Masters have been paying our rental directly to the council) but I may be able to negotiate that some of it isn't our responsibility. So we could be up for up to ~$5000.
We can trade our way out, but it will be tough on our own!
The Superules League sounded interested in coming on board with the possibility of sharing HQ at Fleming Park and we will have the carnival reunion on March 2 which should raise us a few hundred for a start...

Kev W - An update on the water ski plans. Day trip to Nagambie (easy drive 120km north on Hume and Goulburn Valley Highways) on Sunday 25 November 2007 leaving at 9AM and returning late afternoon. All ski gear supplied.
This will be followed by a camping and skiing weekend on 8-10 February 2008. Location will be the Murray near Barmah (preferred) or Nagambie again, depending on water levels. Further details to be confirmed closer to the time.
Anyone interested in these trips, please contact me as follows:
Email: walker.sutherland@bigpond.com Phone: 0418 552 338
Ming replied: I'm coming! Don't know for sure what the good lady wife is doing...
Might leave a little late, as I feel a big election coming, might hit the champers!
Where's the meeting spot and time at Nagambie?
Kev Walker replied: Meeting spot at Nagambie is the only public boat ramp on the lake. As you come into Nagambie, turn left at the first petrol station (I think it is a United brand, on the left). Go about 2 km or so and look out for a turn to the right to the regatta centre and I am pretty sure there is a sign saying public boat ramp. Just before the entrance to a new caravan park which is being built, turn right and follow the track all the way to the end. The end of the track is the boat ramp and picnic area. I will be set up there. The boat is white with green and gold bits (Aussie colours). I'll have my mobile 0418 552 338. Look forward to seeing you there.

Been a might DRY - Fleming Park is suffering from the almost rainless October, but hopefully this latest drop from the sky will stick around for a while. For that other kind of dryness, pre-season is starting off next Thursday 8th Nov.
A few of the guys are keen to start on building the fitness over the summer months, especially with an eye on being able to run off some of the yule tide feasting. So it's a slow build-up to the break, then back in to it. Under new coach Ruby we are going to kick off
pre-season with a get together at the clubrooms from 6pm Thursday 8th Nov.
Lots of keenness looking forward to next season, hopefully plenty of recruits and maybe a new training ethic - turning up rarely might well not be enough to hold a spot!
With our hoped-for influx of new legs, the oldies might be interested in a combined Central or inner-suburbs Over-47s.
More details to follow. Peter Laming 0403-587-979 laming@alphalink.com.au
PRESEASON TRAINING replied: Almost 2 inches of rain in the last fortnight has spruced up the ground beautifully.
Still hard as a rock though. NO BOOTS allowed, we don't want the council heaving us off for as long as possible.

Kev Walker - Subject: Water ski weekend with Kev Walker.
I am planning a water ski weekend on Sat 24/Sun 25 November 2007. Echuca river level is too low, so I'm proposing Lake Nagambie and the Goulburn River. (~120 km North up the Hume and then the Goulburn Valley Hwy). Plan is depends on weather, the lake/river level, number interested.
The basic idea is to head to Nagambie Sat AM and camp the night at a bush spot (non Caravan park) that I know of, and then come back Sunday afternoon. Ski each day on Lake Nagambie and the nearby Goulburn River. People are welcome to come and camp the night, or do a day trip on the Saturday or Sunday. Families and kids are most welcome. I don't think my kids will allow the boat to leave the shed without them coming along!! Maybe a meal at one of the local pubs on the Saturday night after the day's skiing activities and then head to the camp site. Further details will be advised and worked out closer to the time. PRESIDENT's AWARD - I have pleasure in awarding this season's President's Award to John Najjar, who put in plenty of time behind the scenes, offering his van to transport our canteen to alternate venues, and his wood-working skills in donating this year's trophies. - Ming
* The history in the trophies is that they are timber from the old VFA ground Coburg City Oval's goal posts, about 125 years old, which even hosted a season of the old VFL, when North Melbourne played at Coburg in 1965.

2007 AWARDS - The enjoyment we all get out of the game is something for which every player in the club can be congratulated.
Special congratulations to those who featured in the awards for 2007.
Firstly to Kanna on winning his 5th club B&F, and also on passing 400 senior games for Brunswick Ammos-Supers-Masters. That's not counting the 100 or so were he played Resies when he brought kids over from Juvenile Justice for a supervised reintegration into society.
Also to Ruby who had a great first up season, unlucky to be headed in the voting in the last game to be Runner-up by just one vote.
Most Determined Award replied: went to Tim Dolan, the title aptly describing his play and training througout preseason and the season proper.
Most Reliable replied: went to the dependable stalwart of the last line of defence, Laurie Cook.
How many times did he appear out of nowhere to take the saving mark!
Goal Kicking Award replied: went to that little goal-sneak, a novice who has learnt how to time the swoop and who's kicking is improving to the extent he won this award. Gib kicked 11 to narrowly head Stan Aspiotis (10), our only target forward, who had consistantly good performances.
Coach's Award replied: Cookie presented his award to strong marking Scott McInnes for an out-standing season in his first year with Brunswick.

COACH for 2008 - As Cookie stands down, due mainly to moving out to the sticks, a far flung Eastern suburb somewhere beyond Clifton Hill, we have one of our new players put up his hand for the hotseat.
Ruby Kaadan will be our new coach in 08.
Ruby played with the old East Brunswick, back in the 80s, and has been coaching juniors for the last year or so. An obvious fitness-fanatic, I'm sure he will have us on the track for a few weeks before the holiday break, before coming back in earnest in Jan-Feb.
Tim Dolan will be helping Ruby out, as in these days of interchange, a playing coach has a lot on his mind.
Thanks to Paul Cook who coached us a record 3 seasons, not a mean feat when you consider he had to rotate the bench of sometimes 8 or 9 players and he kept us all happy and involved. A supelative effort Cookie!

Cookie - Brunswick Players: On Sunday 19th August, 2007 we have the opportunity to play an 'exhibition game'. The game will be played in Brunswick (Melways Ref: Map 29 F10). The game coincides with a West Brunswick (Division 3 VAFA) social function. The game would start at 11:00 am and be followed by a BBQ in which would would join members of West Brunswick AFC. The aim of the event is to showcase Masters footy while strengthening our ties with West Brunswick (Cookie, Budgie, Ocker, Mark Rodgers & Bob Baker are ex West Brunswick players).
In the first instance, can current day players with Brunswick Masters let me know whether you would be available to play on the 19 August(opposition team to be confirmed) & whether you would be prepared to patronise the West Brunswick's social function post the game: Cost of ticket to function is $20 (all you can eat & drink-Beer & Wine).
Ratty replied: I can and want to play and eat 2 tickets -me and sam
ruby kaadan replied: thanks cookie i am available
Ming replied: I'm in for 2

Cookie - Well done to: Stoney, Scotty, Ming, Kev, Tiger, Chris, Doley, Mick Long who have braved the cold & wet over the past two weeks to get to training
Ming replied: Yes it's ten full years since we had a real wet tracker (Ignoring those 2 days against Diamond Valley when the rain was going sideways) but the surface is still hard underneath. Despite the puddles and the ball shooting occasionally, my lame attempts at getting the guys to do sliding practice...
the heavy old pigskin still took the odd bounce over our heads

Jugs - Hey Ming whats the use of giving Old Scotch a site if they dont use it ??
Merciless replied: Got me there, Jugs. They had a potential recruit asking where training was, so I put details up and gave them the password etc, but we are a bunch of fat fingered computer illiterate out in the eastern suburbs. (I thought that's what the servants were for)
OMITTATA replied: AND the tax deductable 1.2 kids are too spoilt to spare any time helping out us "fat fingered computer illiterate fuddie-duddies".
Maybe thay are waiting for me to rewrite the site in palm-pilot format?

R5 Report - DiamV v Brunsw - we were short so DV lent us one player.
2-0-12 . 1-5-11 - Stan blitzed, fed by Frendo, Kanna, Rog, Doli ...etc...
4-1-25 . 2-6-18 Stan still going OK, but we let them in for 2 easy goals
8-3-49 . 2-6-18 - only 17 men so we bottled it up, a bit too much? DV swindled 4.
8-3-51 . 5-9-39 - It wasn't match over, even though we were one short. Actually we cracked them open, but we had left it too late. Scotty had a shot to make it 6 points the diff with 3 minutes to go, but didn't have the kicking boots on. We lost it in the first, anyway - should have had 3 or 4.
Best: Roger, Frendo, Budgie, Kanna, Stan, Ruby, Doli, Cookie, RobD, Chris ...
Goals COOKIE 2!!! Stan, Gib, Chris

vinnie - gidday pete, where is the venue for state training, and when does it commence
Ming replied: Hi Vinnie, I see you've been playing OK in the Supers, no Masters for you yet.
State training venue is subject of search party. Details and Date shouldn't be too far off. Also, there should be a big function by mid-July for a carnival kick-off.
By the way, on the AVPanthers noticeboard, If you get a 'Forbidden' message, just click the back button, enter a new message, the Required fields and click Submit - it will work the second time. (Strange bug in the program)
vinnie replied: thanks pete interested in carnival might be a chance to go this year, good luck to all this week
vinnie replied: i have only got one masters game for the year i will give you three guesses which one
Ming replied: Er, Coburg? ...Fitzroy? am I getting warm?

Jugs from the Cowboys - MING - Whats the easiest way to get a couple of MAFV Red Footys?
Ming replied: I believe Fletch is back in town this week. Other clubs may have gazumped you though. If none available, Sherrin sponsor MAF so I can only suggest you source Sherrin footies from whereever is cheap.
Jugs replied: Thanks for that Ming
bac replied: Vic country masters have footies for sale, you will be surprised by the cost.

Competition Director - TO ALL: I feel that is necessary to reiterate the Code of Conduct that exists in our Competition, we are only three games into our 2007 season and already we have had incidents that bring our Competition into disrepute. It is the responsibility of all Clubs to control the behaviour of their
players , supporters and officials, breaches to the Code Of Conduct will not be tolerated by the Executive and will be dealt with in the harshest terms, this includes individuals and Clubs.
We all love the contest that is why we still play but we must play and conduct ourselves within the Spirit of Superules , please assist by delivering this message to everyone within your Clubs.
Thanking you all in advance for your assistance and co operation.

Tiger gives a clue. - Just 5 points down with 7 minutes to go, though we played all over them almost all day (except for the not scoring well with the wind in the third and then the last 5 minutes), we went down to Southern Saints 4-13 to 8-8. We had our chances! Here are the unhappy warriors after the game, some with tears in their eyes from one of the front rowers stepping on a frog.

5 weeks later - Look at the difference from the 16th of April to 20th May.
The surface is pretty soft and it's just baby grass, but hope is that we can be playing at home in 2 weeks, start of June?
